Trekking Cambodia : An Unexpected Paradise for Hikers and Trekkers?

Trekking Cambodia

When people think about trekking, images of the Himalayas or European mountain trails often come to mind. Cambodia, with its flat rice fields and humid heat, might not seem like the ideal destination. As a passionate hiker living here, I asked myself the question: can you really go trekking in Cambodia? The answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

Jungle Treks: A Risky Bet?

Let’s be honest — the Cambodian jungle is not the perfect playground for a multi-day expedition. I personally tried a jungle trek in Ratanakiri, and while the scenery was beautiful, many tourist offers felt disappointing. You can quickly find yourself walking in circles instead of venturing deep into the wilderness. For a truly immersive experience, a good local guide and a reputable agency are essential. The key is to manage your expectations: in Cambodia, a “trek” is more about a rich and authentic experience than a physical challenge.

Cambodia: A Land of Historical and Natural Walks

It would be a mistake to dismiss Cambodia based on that one disappointment. If, like me, you enjoy long walks, the country is full of options. The approach is simply different here: it is not about performance, but about discovery.

1. A Walk Through History

This is where Cambodia truly shines. Forget the crowds at Angkor Wat and head out to explore more remote temples. Walking through the trees and ruins of sites like Sambor Prei Kuk or Banteay Chhmar is where you will feel the true magic of the country. You feel like an explorer, far away from the beaten path. These ancient sites, reclaimed by the jungle, offer a unique blend of historical wonder and natural beauty that can only truly be appreciated on foot.

2. Hidden Natural Gems

Beyond the temples, nature walks are absolutely possible. The short hike to Kbal Spean, not far from Siem Reap, is a must for lovers of both history and nature. It is a pleasant immersion into the “River of a Thousand Lingas” and the surrounding forest.

Further south, Kep National Park offers a beautiful half-day hike with stunning coastal views. Kirirom National Park or walks on Cambodia’s islands are also excellent options for a different, more open type of nature experience.

Beyond the Beaten Path: Authentic Walks for Adventurers

For those willing to venture further, there are many hidden gems showcasing Cambodia’s diverse landscapes.

Battambang and Its Countryside: Exploring on Foot

Beyond the main town, the true charm of Battambang lies in its peaceful countryside and rolling hills. One of the highlights is the climb to Phnom Sampeau, a “boat mountain” offering breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding rice fields.

Stay until sunset to watch thousands of bats flying out of the famous “Bat Cave” in a truly unforgettable spectacle. It is an easy walk and incredibly rewarding.

Mondulkiri: A Walk Through the Forest

If you are looking for a more immersive jungle experience, Mondulkiri is an excellent option. Unlike some treks that disappointed me, this region focuses on a different approach.

Many local ecotourism projects, such as the Elephant Valley Project, offer guided walks through protected forests to observe semi-wild elephants. It is not about covering long distances, but about connecting with nature and wildlife in a way that supports local conservation efforts.

The Cardamom Mountains: For More Experienced Trekkers

Considered the last great rainforest wilderness of Southeast Asia, the Cardamom Mountains offer the most authentic trekking experiences in Cambodia.

From villages such as Chi Phat, you can organize tours with local guides ranging from day hikes to multi-day jungle treks with overnight camps. You will cross rivers, discover hidden waterfalls, and have the opportunity to spot unique flora and fauna.

This is the ideal option for travelers looking for a true adventure.

One Final Tip…

If you plan to explore more remote areas, never go alone. Local guides are an invaluable resource — not only for safety, but also for their knowledge of the environment, history, and local communities. They can turn a simple walk into an unforgettable journey.
